All of the stage productions of Wizard of Oz that I have seen have been carbon copies of the movie. I attended the auditions for one productions, and it was the woman who could imitate Margaret Hamilton's portrayal the closest who got the part. I'd be very surprised if the director was looking for anything original or for the actor to make 'interesting choices', my advice would be to watch the movie and DUPLICATE the wicked witch's performance at audition. (I only recommend this approach for this specific show, lol)

Rent or buy the original movie, and study Margaret Hamilton's character... look at how she embraces the role and makes it her own. She IS and will always be the wicked witch, everything about every movement she makes screams evil! you need to do this to... though make it your own.
Acting is living truthfully under the given or imaginary circumstances. The circumstance for you would be your life as the witch... how would she move? why does she move that way? what does she think? and why does she think that way? and so on.... you need to put yourself in those shoes (in any role you take on) and embody the truth of that character in your sole (at least while on stage) :)

projection projection projection!!! I know you've probally heard tht a million times but if your audience cannot hear you there is no point in the play. I just finnished a play for my theatre class and there were a couple of people that were very quiet and they got very small roles.
Also when you are on stge completly become your charecter. walk like them, talk in their accent, have the apperence of what they represent (in your case evil). the best advise my director has ever given me was to forget about being YOU, people who will see the play (your friends and family) see YOU everyday, they are not going to pay money to see YOU being YOU on stage, they want the charecter, good luck ony your production ( : skier12

The Wicked Witch never sings, so you just have to work on making a great character. (The voice, the Cackle, movements and facial expressions.)

I agree with everyone else: Copy some of Margret Hamilton's expressions. But also, BRING YOURSELF INTO IT! Make it unique and new without being too out there. ;-) Look confident, prepared, and when you're not being witchy, SMILE! Good Luck!
