Laziness.
Plain and simple.
Americans have the highest standard of living in the world, and youngsters act like everything is owed to them. Anything bad happens? Not their fault. Someone burns herself holding a too hot coffee cup between her legs while driving? She sues McDonald. Someone gets too fat eating too many burgers? Sue McDonald. Someone does not have the good score to go into engineering college? The parents sue the high school (it must be their fault for not forcing the kid to study right, yes?)
Those are ACTUAL cases, I am not making up anything here.
So, when a kid does not get good marks, well it is the fault of the teacher, of the parents, or the society, and the kid does not make an effort. What is the point? Studying is a waste of time, and it is much better to spend time partying, taking drugs and drinking booze, right?
Meanwhile, most of manufactured goods come from China and India, and at this rate, most scientists and engineers and MD's will come from outside of the US of A pretty soon as well.
Unless US kids start making an effort, instead of putting their homework for other people to answer for them on Yahoo Answers.

(Just look how kids write these days, there is an example right above my answer. "r" for "are", "u" for "you" and so on. It is 2 extra letters, for crying out loud, and kids are so lazy they won't even spell right? SHAME!)

For some reason, there seems to be a long-standing tradition in the US of pride in illiteracy. Add to that the two, going on three, generations of teachers who have been taught that they can teach things they don't understand themselves. Throw in the myriads of psychologists and counselors who believe that discipline is detrimental to the fragile ego of the child. Top it off with foreign scorn of American achievements. Few can survive this deluge of poultry fecal matter, but some do, at incredible emotional if not physical cost. Those few have provided the world with benefits on which it might be wise to reflect.

Actually, take away the American bashing, and other countries have essentially the same problems.

Americans don't use SI units (kg - m - s - A - system)
They always have to make a lot more calculation.
That takes precious time.
