Hi!

Don't worry about irregular cycles. It is easy to tell when you are ovulating, without having to spend any money on kits. You need to do two things:
1. Take your temperature every morning when yo wake up. It will rise slightly when you ovulate around the middle of your cycle) and will stay higher until your next period. Once released your egg only remains viable for fertilisation for 12-24 hours.
2. Keep an eye on your mucus. It will become stretchy like egg white as you aproach ovulation. Sperm can survive for up to 5 days in this most fertile mucus.
Remember that the 28 days cycle is just an average, few women regularly experience this.

You are probably not too overweight to conceive, but you do have an increased chance of getting gestational diabetes. Do not, howeverm go on an unsupervised diet while you are trying for a baby. I would recommend getting in touch with your local Weight Watchers group - I really think they are the best way to lose weight.

As well as taking folic acid you might want to get some pre-natal vitamins too. You should take these for at least three months before conception in order to give your baby the best start in life.

Having a family is a wonderful and exciting thing, but you want to make sure you get it right. Enjoy this time and try not to worry too much as stress can delay ovulation.

Also, learn Natural Family Planning. It is as effective as the pill and jabs and has none of the side effects. Also it is immeideiately reversible!

Good luck!

1) Three months is nothing, the average is 6 months: meaning anything between 0 and 12 months is normal.

2) An irregular period will make it harder

3) You should consider using Ovulation Prediction Kits or saliva testers to see if you are ovulating. The saliva ones are cheapest as it is just a magnifier to look at you saliva and a book explaining it. The pee kinds are easier to use for some women. This website may also help, some women swear by it. It isn't free though: http://ovusoft.com/

4) Quitting... well I don't have a lot of advice. Friends of mine did the laser accupressure thing and said works. I have head accupuncture does to.

5) Eat fruit of veg BEFORE each meal. Start with a salad, veg soup, fruit before breakfast erc. Have a piece of fruit in the afternoon too. Make a menu plan. Plan your lunch and dinner for 5 days per week. Make a commitment to spend the time to make your lunch the night before. And some of the prep for the next nights dinner. By doing to prep the night before you are committing to dinner, this will keep you on track and away from packaged food.

6) It is best not to drink at all while trying to conceive. So consider giving it up. Or only drinking during your period and the week after.

7) Leafy green things! Alfalfa pills, red raspberry leaf tea, spinach, etc are very nourishing to your uterus.

8) Once you are sure you are ovulating: I, personally, would stop charting and just enjoy sex. Aim to have sex every other day (every day is fine too, unless your hubby has sperm issues). Keeping it fun and relaxed is key. I don't think trying hard really helps. Plus the female orgasm really contributes to conception.

9) 11.5 stone (160lbs?) is overweight, but not horrible. Try eating better and smaller meals. Walk every day. These are habits you need for pregnancy anyway. If you want to loose weight do more exercise. (Also give up pop and you will probably loose 15 lbs (1 stone?) in a year. Hubby and I did. Bottles of water give you the same feel so you miss pop less)

After it has been a year then you should go to the doc for some routine tests. You're young, it will happen!

Ok so there are three things that might possibly be restricting you from concieving, but remember lots of overweight unhealthy smokersw get pregnant and you have only been trying for 3 months so there is no need to worry just yet.
Obviously though you want to change your habits to increase your chances so first off the smoking, you should try to cut down gradually maybe replacing some cigarettes with those nicorette inhaler things, or use patches and give up altogether. It is hard I know I gave up but this is the perfect excuse to do it.
As for the eating all you need to do is cut down on processed foods e.g. takeaways, chocolate crisps and eat more fruit, veg and homecooked dinners. Easier said than done I know. But obviously by asking this question you've shown that you really want to do it so all you need is a push. Maybe you could find a friend who will do it with you?
And remember this will benefit you too you will ive longer and feel much better and more energetic.

I am also trying to conceive and its heart breaking i know. The best thing for you to do is to see a doctor, they say that it can take up to a year to conceive.

After a year then doctors will normally do tests. (It is normal for your periods to not return for some time).

From what i have learnt Folic acid does not help you to conceive, it helps the development of the baby. Studies are going at the moment to rectify this.

Cutting down smoking and eating healthier will hel, but see a doctor they may give you drugs to help you go back into a routine.

Keep smiling

I go with this thought if I am to have kids I will have them. We didn't have any for the first 3 years of our marriage. Then we had 2 .. 11 months apart.
The others came when they darn well wanted to.. You are worrying and that doesn't help conceive.
Just love each other and if you don't conceive within a year then look into adoption. That always seems to started a pregnancy at least it did for 2 of my friends :-)

If your periods are irregular the easiest way to know your fertile time is with a fertility thermometer. Take your temp every morn around the same time and around mid cycle you should notice a slight DROP in temp followed by a RIse the following day. also you usually start your period 14 days after ovulation so if you keep a chart you will be able to see your fertile times much more clearly.

In females, cigarette smoking has been linked with both an early onset of menopause as well as directly with infertility. In males it has been linked with decreased sperm density, a lower proportion of motile sperm, decreased total sperm count, reduced testosterone secretion and, as previously shown, an increase in morphologically abnormal spermatids and spermatozoa, which can be a direct cause of various fetal malformations.

In addition, a recent study by Dr Lars Wickmann from the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Tampere University, Finland, found 41.9% of infertility among men who smoked compared to 27.8% among non-smokers.

Therefore it would be wise for you and your husband to give up smoking.
Your chances of conceiving are also greater if you have a BMI between 20 and 25.

However, 3 months isn't a very long time to be trying for, so give it time and good luck!

The harder you try the harder it is. My first child was IVF but the second just came along naturally. You need to:
1. Lose weight (slowly!)
2. Stop drinking and smoking (both of you)
3. Give it longer
4. Enjoy each other and try and forget about the time for a year or two
