Racism has been around for a long time, due to slavery and the whole history and so on and although the modern world has evolved from such evil deeds, some people can't get their head around new ways. It's still in their blood. This doesn't make it right obviously and I am in no way defending them but since racism has only recently (in the past few decades) been (well tried to be) abolished, some strange people are still getting used to it.
Also, its people living in the past, not being modernised, ignorant.
That's just what I think but I'm sure there are many other reasons why people are. All the other answers.

Because humans are imperfect. This imperfection will always leave a little room for hatred, even unintentional. People become racist because of lies and popular beliefs, because of ignorance of the people they claim to hate, because they were raised that way, because they had a bad experience with a member of the race concerned, or perhaps they only act racist to fit in with others who truly feel that way. There are a lot of reasons racism is still here, and I doubt it's going to end in the near future.

Because people are people and some will never change. Might as well look for it forever. Parents teach children to be racist. But, that is no excuse to remain a racist. It is sad for thou who has to deal with it everyday.

Fear, Stupidity, etc. Take your pick!! Also, we make people be racist against us by clinging to our racism and segregation and refusal to look at other cultures. (I am not using the curse word of tolerance! I AM a behaviorist. "Be excellent to eachother." [George Carlin from Bill & Ted's...]) The least racist people I know are halfbreeds or mutts. I am a classic mutt but appear white for the most part. Who can I be racist against, pigmies??? Let me know, I feel dicriminated against as a non-racist...nobody gives me any attention.

People don't understand the whole thing if you ask me. But most people are racist in there own way. What's the point of it. I have to say I'm not racist but i don't believe in opposite races having relations or relationships.

Because they were taught to be by their family and or friends. It is just plain ignorance and fear. Many very racist people lack self confidence and self respect, and it makes them feel better to think that because they belong to a "superior race" there are people beneath them. It makes them feel less like a failure. Pretty sad.

People can be racist idiots at times. I feel it is partly due to human's brains. Our brains naturally pair and group Items, like the connect-a-dot examples or optical illusions, we see things that are not there and sadly, feel comfortable in grouping people.. But if you ask me, the more variety of people, the BETTER!

Racism is a learned kind of behavior, Other people teach other people how to become racist. As with father to son. Or street gang to street gang. It's hard to unlearn hatred.

because they are ignorant and completely UNAWARE of humanity and humility. they lack values, morals and/or common sense.

i remember in some movie (like roots or something), and someone was fighting w/ a black guy and they were like, where is the blood coming from?? cuz they thought black people's blood was Blue. anyways, everyone makes stereotypes and all that against other races/ethnicities, it's Normal. but to hate just based on differences is pretty damn stupid.

not saying they lack basic schooling or college but education on the topic they are racist about. most are racist due to anger or fear of something they don't understand.
