Certified local real state agents; check for some on the Brazilian Yahoo directory but in person and with legal aid that would be far much better.

And land by "posse" alone is definitely not safe. "Posse" means possession, or that current occupiers have been making use of the land for long enough to claim ownership BUT does not imply they have legal deeds or certificates to prove they have lawfully acquired the land by purchase, inheritance, etc. There is a legal distinction in the Brazilian system, and you'll want something that incorporates both elements.Which may not always be the case: illegal occupation of unproductive or public land in the hope of legalising the situation over the course of generations has been an awfully common practise, both in urban and rural areas - social inequalities, homelessness, bureaucracy, historical and political controversies, all have contributed to that.

Good luck!

The first thing you need is a CPF, foreigners are able to obtain them and you don't have to be resident in Brazil. The best way to get it done is through the Brazilian consulate in your country. Hers the link to the form to fill out for application of a CPF for Brazilians or foreigners living abroad (In Portuguese) http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Aplicacoes/ATCTA/CpfEstrangeiro/default.htm . As for buying land by 'posse' , rather you than me matey.

Contact your neares brazilian consulate, and ask if they can reffer you to a local attorney. Posse land is tricky, and you should proceed with caution...
