Parents see myspace and similar sites as a variation on "talking to strangers"...and so are more familiar with the risks than the benefits of doing it. Kids are less concerned with the risks. If there were never any problems, then there would be nothing for parents to worry about, but you do hear about problems.

The problems are not just stalkers, but they also include things like financial scams and viruses. Here's an example:

worm is targeting MySpace users, compromising their "About me" pages and infecting visitors to them, Symantec has warned.

When a logged-in MySpace user goes to another member's "About me" page affected by the ACTS.Spaceflash worm, they are quietly redirected to a URL that holds a malicious Macromedia Flash file, the security company said in an advisory on Spaceflash Tuesday. That file, in turn, will replace the visitor's own "About me" page with one that is compromised.

It's not the kids having a myspace account that bothers parents; It's the other people that hack into myspace accounts that are very perverted and most parents don't want their kids life posted all over the web for every predator to look at and discover.

It's is not that we don't trust our children (I have a 13 and 18 year old), it is that we don't know who is looking at your Myspace and we can't trust those we don't actually know.

When it first came out, I thought it was kind of a clever idea didn't have a problem with it. But the more I was hearing on the news, I started to feel very unconfortable with it - and so did my daughter. She didn't like that people were posting (harmless) pics of her and her friends on their Myspace without her permission. We decided it was best to delete her account. My son's is set to private - . There are too many perverts and predators out there, and you just can't tell who they are when they are sitting behind their computers...

Did you know?! Thirteen teenage girls all got raped in montana and when the crook was caught, he said that he found out about where the girls lived and when the best time would be to victimize them because he got on myspace and found out. This has actually happened in several other states, too. Your parents don't want you to get hurt!!!

Children cannot make good decisions regarding what information to share. You put your picture up, some freak gets obsessed with you and hunts you down. You post things about your school activities that you don't even realize gives away so much info, same psycho finds you.

Plus, it's better to promote actual human interaction.

Parent don't like my space because you are interacting with strangers and your parents don't have control over what they say to you or what you say to them.
That makes parents very uneasy because they don't know if someone bad that you think is your friend maybe able to influence you. Or you may give them information they could use later to hurt you. It's not about trust it's about them worrying for your safety.

MY SON (15 YRS OLD) HAS A MYSPACE ACCOUNT,BUT I KNOW HIS ID ,AND PASSWORD.
I TOO HAVE A PAGE.
LOTS OF MY ADULT FRIENDS DO NOT LIKE THEIR CHILDREN HAVING THIS,BUT I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT.
IT'S HOW I KEEP UP WITH FRIENDS , AND SPECIAL EVENTS.
AS LONG AS MY SON DOESN'T ABUSE IT (GIVING OUT PERSONAL INFO) HE CAN KEEP IT.
