From the lobby, Launhardt points at the Cobalt Hotel, a well-known hang-out for drug dealers and pimps. She says organized crime has given the area a terrible image. "Most of the people who live in this neighbourhood are simply the working poor. They're victimized by criminals and drug dealers. They don't like them anymore than we do."

Burglars Boost ’Balt Booze
In the early-morning hours of November 16, thieves broke into the bar at the Cobalt Hotel (917 Main Street) and made off with more than $1,000 worth of booze. According to the Cobalt’s wendythirteen, they would have gotten away with more than that if someone hadn’t seen them. After removing the alcohol, it seems the burglars returned and were in the process of taking the club’s sound equipment when an employee of the hotel scared them off.

“Basically, the cops have told me that I’m **** out of luck,” wendythirteen told the Straight, “because no one actually witnessed someone leaving the bar with either the liquor or the sound gear, even though someone was out front with the sound gear. I doubt if they’re even looking for the perpetrators. Pretty great.”

To help restock the Cobalt’s liquor cabinet, wendythirteen is holding a benefit show, featuring performances by Grotesquery, Screaming Chicken Surprise, sideshow freak Neil E. Dee, standup comic Aubrey Tennant, the Fondlers, Blackie Leblanc, and Mr. Plow. For full details, see the message board at www.thecobalt.net/.

Wendythirteen said she doesn’t expect the benefit to bring in enough cash to replace all the purloined booze, but she said every little bit helps. “Hopefully it’ll soften the blow a little.”

For the better part of the last decade, the Cobalt bar became a haven for Vancouver's punk scene, spearheaded by blonde mohawked Wendy Thirteen, whose devotion to punk and metal music has withstood many ....

Cobalt is a dive, and like Wikipedia says, is a hang-out for drug dealers, and low lifes and should be avoided at all costs.
