Arachne. She was a weaver who was bragging about her weaving and got into a contest with the Greek goddess Athena, who outwove her with designs from Mt. Olympus. The myth, as i remember, says that Arachne then hanged herself in shame. Athena fixed it so that she would not die, but become a spider, weaving throughout the day. You might recognize the word Arachnephobia (spelling, ?) from the movie of the same name which came out years ago. Didn't appeal to me, didn't see it. :-).

she(arachne) was a fine mortal weaver in greek mythology and athena the goddess of wisdom, weaving and war heard about her weaving skills. she came down to where mortal lived and had a contest with her. athena turned her to a spider
