Valence electrons determine chemical properties. For example, all of the elements in Group IA (Alkali Metals) and Group IIA (Alkaline Earths) of the Periodic Table have similar chemical properties, and their valence electrons are either s1 (IA) or s2 (IIA).

it is the third one if you look on top of your periodic table you'll see numbers that mean there is that many valence electrons there in that whole column
