A motto at our school is "Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours" I disagree with this statement because whether or not the day turns out great is often times not up to you. So this leads to other things, is your life preset or do you make it. Are there certain things in your life that are out of your control?
And for people of religion, if God knows the future, then how are we supposed to make a choice that has already been made? Is that freedom of Choice?
I know the answers but I would like to observe the input from various people with differing ideas. Answer with details please!

Belief. What is a belief? A belief is something someone believes in. You can choose whether you want to belief or not. Reasons to not believe in fate, is that is gives us hope. Someone without any hope have no more reasons to live. That is why so many suicides are committed. Some people have no hope and see suicide as the only way out. Other people sees life as full of opportunities and full of choices.

I think that there is a kind of fate, but we can change what our fate will turn out to be by our choices. Like if you choose to get an extra bottle of water before driving out into the desert. That may mean that you survive when your car breaks down. If you hadn't made that choice, your fate would have been different (e.g. to die)

I have mixed thoughts about free will. I do believe that, to a certain extent, we are programmed by our DNA. If who our parent are effects our hair and eye color, a tendency to get get certain diseases, etc., why not our psychological makeup. I do, however, believe that our social milieu has some effect on us too. The combination of these 2 things, perhaps along with others, may give the appearance at least of people having free will.

"Fate" is a misnomer. Yes, there are things we are "fated" to do, but not because a higher power has decided, but because we have fated OURSELVES to do it.

Everything we do is a prerequisite of what we will do. If we decide to study nuclear science and apply ourselves entirely, we are "fated" to become nuclear scientists. If we decide to smoke meth, then we are "fated" to become addicts.

What you choose now -- good or bad -- will affect what you do in the future.

THAT is what is behind the phrase "Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours.
