Well, video games give you loads of these stories.

Zelda, Tales of Symphonia, Fire Emblem

All you are really speaking of is location. In a sense, "Dude, Where's My Car?" is a kind of mythology of search, rescue and return.

"O Brother, Where Art Thou" is a modern retelling of "The Odyssey".

It could be something as simple as finding the perfect Christmas tree, only having the car stolen and how you can track it all down

Well, there was just a story about a computer guy named Kim who got lost in a snowstorm in Oregon, he died but his efforts may have saved his wife and children.

For an example of a modern day redeemer, tragic or wondering hero, go look at the Oprah website. She features people who make a difference in the lives of others.

See Sources below:
James Kim was a respected expert on cutting-edge digital devices, an owner of a trendy clothing store and a lover of the futuristic-sounding music known as electronica.
Yet, according to friends, most of Kim's life revolved around old-fashioned values: sacrifice, friendship and family. Those who knew him say they aren't surprised that Kim, in the last act of his life, demonstrated the ultimate expression of devotion to his wife and daughters.

Many of you have been following the search for our CNET colleague James Kim. After the good news that his wife and two children were found in good condition, James' body was found yesterday in a remote part of the Oregon wilderness, where he had been missing for 11 days. James was a devoted husband, father, friend and colleague, whose resourcefulness helped keep his wife and daughters alive. He will be missed.

9/11. The three in the elevator when the tower collapsed and they survived. Two firemen took the time to help a woman with a lame foot, and they used the elevator. That's what put in the right place to survive. The rubble piled up on the bottom floors then started piling up around the elevator. When the main mass reached where they were in the elevator (a few floors up) the rubbish was piled around it high enough so that it piled over the hole where they were - like in a cacoon. They needed to be saved by other firemen.

The topic being mythology, how about creating and writing about the adventures of a comic book style superhero?

Something along the lines of "Yahoo Answer Man"...

"Holy zounds, where will I ever get help on my creative writing project...?"

(Enter Yahoo Answer Man stage left accompanied by the usual cheesy theme music....)
