Murder most foul. No, it means you're guessing, because you don't know for sure.

Ok, let's say you were in the dark with someone and they're moving around. You stab out with your hands or a knife trying to hit the other person. You can't see what you're doing so you're just guessing where that person might be to hit them.

It's like when you don't know a question. You take a wild guess, hoping you're going to say the right answer out of all the possible answers there are.

That's why they say 'stab in the dark' because it would be like someone trying to stab someone else in the dark. You MIGHT hit them but it's very rare.

It means not really having any idea of the answer but taking a guess. As in, if you were in the dark and had to stab someone you couldn't see or hear, you might as well just stab out at anything.

A long shot. Think of trying to stab something (in the dark). You don't know exactly where it is, so you're just having a wild guess.

A guess. Since you cannot see in the dark, you are stabbing, but not knowing if you will hit until you do (or don't).

it means just guessing. without any real knowledge or background for something having zero understanding but trying anyways.

it was just a stab in the dark.

It means taking a wild guess at something. I've heard "shot in the dark" more often.

It just means having a go at something, although you have no idea of how to really go about it and are most likely just guessing

well the phrase is actually, 'a shot in the dark.' and it refers to blindly guessing... I mean, if it's pitch black outside, and you fire a gun, what are you going to hit. You don't know...
