I am not sure such a compromise could have been reached. Slavery is just one of a multitude of issues that lead to the Civil War. Basically the South felt like it was being used and abused by the North and was tired of it. A compromise may have postponed the Civil War, but I think such a war was inevitable because the differences between the North and the South were so large. Even today we see some of these same economic and political difference show up between the South and the North.

There could have been no compromise. (That was tried btw). The south made things either / or... Either let us secede or go to war. Thankfully the Union prevailed. Imagine what the U.S. would be like now otherwise... a region fragmented.

actaully it was states rights that started the civil war, slavery was an aside that allowed the North to free people "Lincoln Republican" and also caused choas in the South for a slave if he/she survived would be free if he/she made it up north.

Oh well a good compromise would be realizing this is the 21st century and nothing you come up with will matter. On the other hand if this is your homework I believe there is a section for homework help.

After seeing the results of the presidential election, I say, after 230 years, we have reconsidered our war with the South. You may be free and be your own country. Please take Mr. Bush with you, and "Y'all have a good ol time"
