You can't. That's the simplest way of putting it. The only thing that is the same is the frequencies. Everything else is different. CDMA uses spread spectrum and GSM is based on time division multiple access for frequency sharing. Requires a completely different chipset. Not to mention, CDMA access is based on a customer's ESN and GSM uses a SIM card to hold account details i.e. the IMSI. In other words, the only thing that would be the same about the phone is the shell, pretty much.

However, there are phones made which do both CDMA and GSM. Carriers such as Verizon activate these as CDMA on their network and also provide a SIM card meant for roaming use, particularly overseas. If you bought one of these phones outright and took them to a GSM carrier, you would probably have a difficult time getting them to activate the CDMA half of the phone. Examples of phones that have both GSM/CDMA in the one handset are:

Motorola a840
Samsung a795
Samsung i830

No. Nuts, is of course, nuts. There are dual system phones like Blackberry Tour that have both GSM and CDMA radios inside. But a pure GSM phone can't be converted to CDMA. --- Kasey C, PC guru since Apple II days Ever notice that protesters have nothing better to do?
