I personally would give it to some African cause..people are very derisory when it comes to Africa... but really that continent is in a mess.. there are children dying every minute.. and although we also have suffering in the UK, it is nowhere near the scale which is experienced over there.
In the UK we have a national health service, social security benefits, state housing....the system fails a lot of people it is true, but still, people here are not dying from Aids on the same scale; women are not being sexually assaulted as a form of warfare; people are not eating weeds as they have no food, children are not being left with no parents or family due to the continued wars over there...the continent in parts is one of absolute devastation..
It must be a hard decision for you.. I don't envy your choice as there are some worthy answers here..I would consider Africa, as a little money or even provisions can go a long way there.

Making people beg for money!!
I really do not feel that that is very nice because there are going to be many people who have answered your question who are going to be disappointed when you don't choose them..
Isn't this just about you feeling a little bit powerful now that you have won the lottery.. and no I am not envious.. I won quite a large amount last year but really would not do this sort of thing as it's rubbing other peoples' noses in it...

I have to ask the question, if you won quite a lot why only £1000. and if you are giving to charity then Im not sure yahoo is going to be the best place to start looking.
there are worthy causes in their millions. and we will all have our own bias. I for example would love you to give money to the small parent support charity I am on the committee of. My own daughter sufers from the condition and although she is 18 is still waiting to develop into a "woman" something all her friends did at 11 or 12. constant hospital visits, infections, transfusions and nightly treatments have taken their toll, but ....
i could go on and on, you see something close to me, so I think its the most worthy cause in the world. if your interested www.diamondblackfan.org.uk we would love to have £1000 it would pay for another 5 different sets of leaflets on the condition.

Hello,
This is a very sincere gesture.. I won £5000's worth of holiday vouchers a few months ago and used them to give family and friends a holiday abroad... so congratulations on your win.
I am travelling [using my own money ] to Uganda and Rwanda on the 31st December. I intended to take clothes, shoes [shoes in particular] over for the refugees, displaced people, children in orphanages; those affected by Aids/HIV and the children in particular who have been forced into becoming child soldiers and have been forced into killing in some case their own parents and friends [there are still conflicts going on in the North and North West of Uganda].

It is a difficult one, as I appreciate that there are many people who believe that charity should start at home, but each time I visit an underdeveloped country, I feel so very fortunate that I was born in the UK, and have all of the opportunities that I have been afforded, even the ability to win my own little competition prize...
Any assistance would be appreciated and it would not need to be monetary, it could be clothing or shoes which would not need to amount to £1000.
In any event.. enjoy your win! Moreover, I hope that your friends and family are happy for you and don't make you feel that you have to give more to them then you are willing or able to. A couple of people fell out with me as I could not stretch the vouchers to give everyone a holiday which was quite sad...

Childline,
British Heart Foundation,
NSPCC.
They all have a genuine need for the money.
I have a genuine need for the money to repay debts, I've just got out of hospital recovering from pneumonia, I went to the Doctors today to find I have Gastric Flu as well, I left the Doctors and my car broke down so I had to walk home in the rain with Pneumonia and Gastric Flu and lost my earing on the way.
But does that make me a worthy cause. !!!!!
The most Genuine need and worthy cause are surely something that you value as important.
Congratulations and good luck with the spending.

You should donate the money to a place in Reading, called Christchurch Gardens. It's a home for the disabled and those with down's syndrome. I feel they are worthy as they do some very good work and not all the people who live there can afford little treats

What a lovely thing to do.
How about the Salvation Army.
To me that's what Xmas is all about.
They help people who realy need it at this time of year.
They also have shelters for female victims of abuse and their children.
I hope you enjoy your money
You are a lovely person

I would love to be in the position to offer the money to charity. It's been tough this year. I sold up and moved to France for love !!! We are now stuck in a position of having no oil for heating and only a few hundered euros for Christmas and most of January...the kids are great and understand...but we have no hot water or heating and it is freezing, making the house damp. Also our funds are needed for my friend to travel to the UK for an on going court case to protect his kids, that's all I can say on that. We are so happy here together but are really struggling to even put food on the table at the moment. The money would mean everything just now. New baby arriving in a few weeks too!! I hope you enjoy your chunk of the dosh and have a fab Christmas.
PS...this feels weird...I've never had to put my case forward like this before..!

well here is a place that would really need help.
the first place is an orphanage in Mongolia.. you can even check out that your money goes straight to the place and you help so many kids who have no where to go. they are not looking for adoptions but just contributions for these kids who cannot live at home with their parents.
http://www.lotuschild.org/stories.htm
also, here is a place where you can give charities to specific causes like a woman who has hiv and for 12 dollars you can buy formula milk for her baby so she wont transfer the virus to her baby or you can buy school supplies for a kid that will last him a year or more.
http://www.amurt.us/
actually anyone can donate to these people.. but i really feel something close for the kids in the orphanage.. read their stories.. look at their faces...help them out anyone :)
