When you starve yourself, your body has an automatic response to a) STORE FAT and b) slow down your metabolism, which burns fat.

In other words, YES - your friend will gain weight in the long run.

NOT HEALTHY! If she really wants to lose weight, I would just tell her that!

Good luck to you - anorexia is a scary thing and your friend needs you!

I actually am a tiny bit anorexic. It all started because I thought I was fat even though other people said I wasnt but yeah I wouldjust eat and throw up all my food. after you start starving yourself...You'll never end up like your body. Even if you dont have any fat on it you will still think you can get skinnier and it will just go on and on. I think the best way to hand this one as a friend is to tell her that starving her self will only make things worse and bring up the option of going on a diet together...Exercising, eating better together. If she doesnt like the idea and you can tell she is loosing weight from not eating..please talk to someone that can help her before it gets to out of hand. as a friend its your job to do whats best for her even if it hurts.

No, starving yourself makes your body go into a state called ketosis, whereby your body cannibalizes your neighboring cells to get the nutrients it needs in order to survive.

Protein is needed for the brain. The brain will use more protein in 1 hour of learning from a teacher than a four hour work out. The brain requires more protein that muscle.

Protein exists in all muscles of the body, including the heart. This is why anorexics always die of congestive heart failure and why there was a recall of a drug causing fat loss from the FDA, because the body will not discern muscles from heart muscle when cannibalizing cells to get the protein it's not getting when she is starving herself.

It also causes bone loss, so she is setting herself up for early osteoporosis. Getting old faster is a proposition she is creating, if she survives long enough to get osteoperosis before her heart gives out first while she is young.

But, before that happens, she will become short tempered, dazed, forget doing her homework assignments, score horribly on tests and fail school if she is stll in school. The brain is the first to go. The headaches she will experience will be horrible.

I would suggest a good psychologist to talk out her problems because while she is starvng herself, this is what you have to look forward to. You will lose her friendship because she will become unbearable to be around, because she will be taking out her tempermental crying spells and moods on you or anyone close to her.

By starving herself, instead of shining very brightly and not worrying about what other people think so that she can be an achiever in life, she is drawing to herself more of that which she doesn't want, which is a spiral of self loathing.

Not to mention the fact that insurance is no longer affordable and because of that, medical insurance is evolving into a credit rating system. If you have any history of chronic illness and or disease like anorexia insurance will use this credit rating system and unfortunately, she will not be able to qualify for a loan for a car or a home. See the future of our health care by reading the book called "The Cost of Being Sick" by Nickolas Web.

How's that for a reality check for her future? 19 is young, but the years go by really fast, so she'd better think about where she wants to be in five years and if her starving herself is worth the fast track down hill with an oxidized worn out and older version of herself... or a healthy vibrant, much more energized and happy prosperous version of herself by not starving herself, but learning how to eat right.

No it wont help her lose weight. If anything it's gonna hurt her , Her body is gonna feed of her Muscles. which in turn is gonna make her weak. I went to High School with a girl like that , an she ended up spending 9 months in the Hospital trying to get her body back to normal. IF she wants to lose weight that bad , Have her go on a Good Diet plan , with a work out everyother day. She will notice a change for the good. Good Luck.

Are you kidding? She's mentally ill. She has no self-esteem and thinks that losing weight is going to make her happy. It won't and it will do even more harm to her. She will feel worthless and blame everything on the fact that she is still fat--even when she becomes emaciated. Here's more info:

I can't believe she needs proof. If she really wants to do this, there is nothing you can do. She's an adult.

Perhaps you could take your friend to a doctor and have a doctor explain to her what is happening... and show her on charts what her healthy weight should be.
