Well, I would say yes, but I would actually save up my money and get a PS3 if you don't already have a console now.
For a while, it could be great. There are still a LOT of games that run on the PS2, even new games coming out for the PS2.
But after a year or so, most everything will be for the PS3.
Depending on how cheap PS2s get, it may well be worth it.
Basically, if you can save up enough money in the next 3-6 months or so, I'd go ahead and get the PS3. If you don't think you can do that, maybe getting a PS2 is a good idea. You'll get lots of playing time out of it.
But, if you can spend whatever for a 2 and then some games, you CAN probably afford the PS3. So, actually, I'd just go with the 3.

Its Worth It To Buy It Now Given The Large Amount Of Games You Can Play On It & Its Much Cheaper. Its Better If You Wait For A PS3 Cause It Backward Compatible So That You Can Plan PS2 (& PS1) Games On It. I Have A PS2 & Plan To Enjoy It For Another Year Or 2 Before I Get Me A PS3.

If money is no object get the PS3. It'd be a good idea to have a high res television also. The PS2 still has alot of good games and sometime come in bundles with three or more games. I'm not digging the price on the PS3 tho. Sony's forgetting there a lot of Po' ppl out here.

I have just bought a PS2 for my daughter for Christmas. I am replacing a PS2 which has just died. I looked at all the different options and spoke to her about which one she prefers. We decided on the PS2 for many reasons.First being price, second availability and range of games, and third, number of games we already own.
For less than the price of an XBOX360 and one game I have a PS2 and seven games

Yes, of course, the PS2 is still a great console and has loads of games. The PS3 is great, but it's not like games are AMAZING for it or anything yet.
And, the PS3 is so expensive for that BlueRing thing, a PS2 is a much better buy for the regular buyer.
So, go ahead. Buy the PS2, its a great console!
