that when you get lost in your car and stop to ask direction`s the person you ask always seems to be the local idiot....

I think basically, subconsciously it comes down to you. If you are lost, you get nervous and irritated (I do anyway), you get angry with yourself, then you see someone, stop and ask the way. The person you speak to is not expecting it and is calm, but when you ask, you transmit your irritation which causes that person to say something quickly (he feels your sense of urgency) that you are only half listening to because you wish you were there already! Then of course when you cannot find the way..it was that village idiot of course. It is easy to blame others, but difficult to fault oneself.

Because 80% of people don't know anything at all. So statistically you are almost bound to get an idiot. A lot of them are doctors, members of personnel departments, estate agents, solicitors etc.
