Its a old junker so I don't care if I damage it, can I set it up to be hotwired and not need a key?

Depending on the year you sure can. But you may want to have a locksmith or dealer re-cut some keys for you. By the time you break the column lock and wire in a toggle switch for the ignition and a push button for the starter you might have been better off just getting new keys made.
Your call though.

You can. But you can also spend $8 and go to the dealer with you VIN and they can order you a new key.

Don't forget that the key unlocks the steering column, to turn right and left.

Just replace the ignition assembly altogether.
