Christopher Columbus was not the first European to visit America. Several hundred years before Columbus, Vikings established a colony in North America. A viking sea captain named Leif Ericson was probably the first European to land in the New World. He spent the winter in a place he called Vinland. Although there is no positive proof, most archaeologists think tha Vinland was on the island of Newfoundland.
What's the 1 mistake in it?

Not counting the typo that you already mentioned, in the part where you wrote "A viking sea captain named Leif Ericson" the word "Viking" should be capitalized. Also, "Ericson" has variously been spelled as "Erickson" or "Ericcson" or even ended with "en" instead of "on" depending on who is spelling it.

There's more than 1 mistake
First, it says that most archaeologists think that Vinland was on the island of Newfoundland, but what evidence is there that that is actually a fact? If the paragraph is trying to refute a myth, it needs a fact instead of an assumption. This paragraph is trying to state that Christopher Columbus was definitely not the first European to visit America, but it ends up saying "there is no positive proof."
Also, the word "that" is missing a t in the last line.

Although there is no positive proof, most archaeologists think tha Vinland was on the island of Newfoundland.
You left the "t" off of the word that in the above line.

The first land he met was covered with flat rock slabs (Old Norse: hellur). He therefore called it Helluland ("Land of the Flat Stones"), probably the present day Baffin Island. Next he came to a land that was flat and wooded, with white sandy beaches, which he called Markland ("Wood-land"), usually assumed to have been Labrador.
