Charlie has a good answer. I've been to Mexico and other parts of Central America, and followed the rules and have not gotten sick. I have had friends who thought they did not have to be careful and ate whatever they wanted (fresh fruits, etc.) and they DID get sick. Seriously, play it safe, you don't want to ruin your trip. Also, I was told if you are buying water from a street vendor, make sure that the bottle hasn't been open (cap is still intact) as there have been reports of shady vendors filling empty bottles with the tap water there and selling it.

Hi!!! I think this is your first time in Mexico. Who told you that you can´t drink the water? Have you ever asked why do Mexican people drink the same water and they´re still alive???
Of course you can drink the water and the ice but just in restaurants not in the streets.
When you think in negative things; negative things happen.
Tequila is made with the same water you better don´t drink tequila. See you and enjoy your trip.

It depends where you are in Mexico. Many tourist areas have filtration systems and the ice should be okay. I still wouldn't risk it though. Definitely don't drink tap water. But I've had the ice in drinks and never had a problem. I was in Cancun & Playa del Carmen.

I am mexican and I am really worried about what most of the people think. Even water is not recommended to drink, all the companies (restaurants and hotels) buy ice to ice companies; these ice companies produce ice from purified water, and they are regulated by the mexican goverment. In another hand, most of the mexican people drink purified water and produce ice from bottled water in their own fridge.
But if visit little towns I don't recommend you to have ice in your drink

If the water isn't safe and the ice is made from the local water, I would have to say don't have the ice...

If you are at a big tourist resort or hotel, it is safe. They all use bottled water to serve for drimking and for ice. You can always ask to be sure. In smaller restaurants, no. Anyway, it is not the custom to put ice in drinks in restaurants in Mexico...except the big tourist places where customers expect it. In non-touristy parts of Mexico, they always serve you bottled water and put bottled water in the hotel room for you to use...even in the humblest of hotels. i am an American living in Mexico and have learned these things by experience. Believe me, a big tourist hotel would be out of business in minutes if they served tap water or ice to guests.

All the hotels and resorts filter their water so it's safe. Bottled waters are safe too. Don't drink like from water fountains & stuff. Although it's all filtered and safe to drink, you may still notice a slight change in your "body".

NONONONO!!!! We have a plant in mexico and some people from ours had to go there for training and they forgot that ice is made from water aparently. They were sick for 2 weeks. If you can't peal it don't eat it, if it's not in a sealed bottle don't drink it!
