Moisture is the most important thing--get your beard wet with warm water to soften the whiskers. Leave it wet a minute or two, then use a good shave cream and massage in the foam or cream into the whisker to help lubricate the beard.
Use a good razor--double or triple blade; rinse after each stroke. Stroke downwards on your face and neck, upwards will cut the hair off even shorter but will also usually nick you worse. Razor nicks bleed like a stuck pig, by the way, so be prepared to bleed.
Once you have finished shaving, use a washcloth to thoroughly wash off the leftover shaving cream and cut hair. If you leave some on to dry, it can irritate the skin.
I prefer shaving in the shower, no mess in the sink. Get a fog free mirror and the steam helps to further lube your whiskers.

you can use a razor like the ones from bic or gillette which have replacement razor heads. you can also use disposable razors or electric razors. before you shave, get some shaving cream and work up a good lather. put it over the shaving area. then go ahead and start shaving. try not to go too rough or you will end up cutting your skin even with the shaving cream. if you need to, after you shave you can put on some after shave.

These will help, though I just rinse the razor under running water. The skin on you face may get irritated "razor burn" just use a lotion with aloe vera in it after shaving until your skin toughens up. Avoid putting on anything with alchol in it afer shaving. This will burn.
