I have a problem with motivation. I have a decent job, but I am an underachiever. I try to work, but I can't. I know that it sounds stupid, but I just can't get motivated. Yes, I can be considered lazy, but the fact of the matter is that I try and lose focus. I have an IQ of 130, and I always get great reviews at work, but I don't understand how I do it. I wait until the last minute, but still manage to get things done. In reality, I do about 8 hours of work in a 40 hour work week, and if my boss knew what I was doing, I would be fired in a heartbeat. I feel guilty because I know I can do so much better. Does anyone have suggestions as to how I can get motivated and get my work done. Does anyone else have a problem with motivation?

It doesn't quite sound like a problem of motivation. It sounds more like a problem of performance. If you are a accumulating good reviews and completing the required assignments, then I think you are producing a minimal amount of work.
Are you really happy where you're working at? Do you feel that your assignments challenge your ability? Do you look forward to going to work when you start your day?
There are things you could do to buffer your feelings about your apparent lack of performance. You could research and analyze performance/production ratios in your company and produce a report which would increase production numbers for your department. You could volunteer to do those assignments the entire department talks about, but never initiates.
The idea is introduce, initiate, complete assignments/tasks which can ignite a passion in your character. Once this is done, you'll soon be asking for overtime and forget all about the 'Answers' site. Or, better yet, you'll be asking 'Answers' how to create ideas regarding time management due to your increased workload. Good luck!

It seems procrastination is your only "motivation" for now. I mean some people work better under pressure, I wouldn't consider that "lazy" per se. Everyone's motivated differently it's hard to point you in the right direction.

Money is always the motivation. Do you get bonuses? Great reviews would bring you bonuses I would assume? Just think "OK the earlier I turn this in, the better I will look, and the more money my boss will give me."

Think about all the possible positions higher than yours right now and try to reach for them. If you're set with the mentality that this is it for you - like you're just happy with your 9-5 job doing the average joe tasks then it's hard to get motivated. You have to find what you love doing in life and turn it into a job you do everyday and get paid for it.

Sorry that was rant-y paragraph but I hope it made sense.

Maybe you need to find ways of bettering yourself that are of value to you. Most people work well under pressure and some things just come natural to them. You may not be getting challenged enough in your current job duties which makes you underachieve because once you finish your work you have time to slack off.

Have you tried asking for more responsibility are applying to promote or move to another department or position?

I used to have trouble with motivation, but put it down to my negativity, you seem to be intelligent, you get out of bed in the morning, get showered or washed, that's motivation through habit, if you wasn't motivated at all you would turn up at work stark naked or not get bothered to get up. lack of self confidence and concentration plays a large part, how I got motivated was read up on the subject got rid of my negative outlook became positive, found some goals I wanted to achieve and have never looked back.life is much better and interesting and it's grand to be alive.

Try joining a gym. A good workout 3-5 times a week will do wonders for your energy level and self-esteem.

If your boss is happy with your work, maybe your being too negative about your own work - after all, your boss (if he/she is competent) should have some idea how productive you are.
