What is the connection with the Irish and the midlands? What is it that brought them here? Why the Midlands? Why not somewhere nicer? Is it just me or have you noticed that there is a very large Irish community in the Midlands?

PS I don't have a problem with the Irish, I'm marrying one

xx

By far the biggest Irish community is in and around Liverpool. During the potato famine, millions died of starvation, and those who could escape made their homes as near to where they first landed as possible. The most accessible port from Dublin, at that time, was Liverpool - my ancestors were amongst them.

As with all other expatriates the world over, they then settled into communities, one of which is in the midlands.

The middle of England is closer to Dublin than the rest of the country, near the ports, I suppose. It's the same reason you have a lot of Irish in New York and Boston, close to the ports.
