Bristol is not a county. the city is in Avon

In 1373, King Edward III granted Bristol county status – an honour it has held almost without interruption until the present day.

The looney left destroyed the charter in the mid 1970's and amalgamated Bristol into the new county of Avon for "demographic" purposes.

Its is the City and County of Bristol The date was 1 april 1996 when the county of avon was gotten rid of and bristol became a unitary county.( It got chnaged to Avon in the seventies )

It became a unitary authority in the last big shake up, I think that was in 1998.

Other examples include Cardiff, Newport, Poole, Brighton & Hove and Medway Towns.

Coz it sure as hell ain't a county - it's very much a part of the county of East Somerset (formerly Avon).
