1. Well the thickness of a quarter is 1.75mm and one inch is equal to 25.4mm so by that calculation you would require 14. 514 quarters to equal an inch.
2. Knowing that the average distance from Earth to the Moon is 238,855 miles and we know that 1 mile is equal to 63,360 inches then the distance to the moon in inches would be 63,360 * 238,855 = 15,133,852,800 inches

a. One million quarters would be 1,000,000 * 1.75mm = 1,750,000 mm / 25.4 = 68,897 inches

b. No they would not reach the moon, because you would require as stated earlier 15,133,852,800 inches to reach the moon. That being said you would need around 1,042,707,234 quarters to reach the moon.

I'm not one to do the work for you, but I'll help walk you through it:

First, get some quarters and a ruler. I just measured and I was able to measure exactly an inch of quarters. You'll need less than twenty. Remember that if you can only get a half an inch worth, you can multiply that by 2 to get one inch in quarters. THIS IS YOUR ANSWER TO THE FIRST QUESTION (I'll refer to it as #).

Now, note that each quarter is a fraction of an inch high. There are two methods to determining 2a. First is that you can divide one million (1,000,000) by #. The other method is to multiply 1/# by one million. Your answer will be in inches.

Note that to answer 2b you have two different units: miles and inches. You need to use the same unit in order to determine whether the quarters will reach the moon. An online conversion table told me that 1 mile = 63,360 inches. When the distance to the moon and the length of one million quarters are in the same unit you can look at the numbers to determine whether the quarters will reach. If they do not reach, you'll need to do a little bit more math. Determine how many inches it is to the moon. You already know # is the number of quarters in an inch. Multiply # by the number of inches to the moon to determine the number of quarters it would take to get there.

I believe 20. somewhere in the vicinity of 15-20 quarters. You see I work at a store and a roll is ten dolloars, i.e. 40 quarters and thats about 2 and 1/2 to 3 inches long. This is just an approximation though.

a. 14 in to 1,000,000 then devided by 12= 5,952.39 feet
b. no they wound not reach the moon.
14 times 12 times 5,280 times 238, 855.= 168 x 5,280=887,040x 238,855 = You wont the number you do the math, my calculator wont go that high. This part was hard enough and for 10 points for something that don't matter anyway, why should I take the time to give you this number.

15/inch=180/foot=950,400/mile
1,000,000/950,400=1.05 miles
to reach the moon you need
15*12*5280*238855=227,007,792,000 quarters

the height of one quarter is 0.069 in (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter_(U.S._coin)).

1. Divide 1 by .069. Answer: 14.493. So about 14 quarters.
2. a) Multiply .069 by 1,000,000. Answer: 69,000 inches, 5750 feet, 1.09 miles
b) No. 238,885 x 5,280 (number of feet in 1 mile) x 12 (number of inches in a foot) x 14 (number of quarters in an inch) = 211,900,550,400 quarters to reach the moon
