There are slight differences in regional accents - the Midwest accent tends to be slight - just a bit flat, but nothing huge, like the south or a severe New York accent. That is why quite a few newscasters and anchors all hail from the Midwest - it's a neutral accent. Everyone else has to try and tone down their regional inflections.
As for being abroad, some people from other countries think the American accent is cool, some don't.There is a great variety after all. It also depends on who is speaking and what they are saying - sometimes if you are saying something very stupid and or insulting - the accent doesn't really matter.
To American ears not all accents are great, so turnabout is fair play to them as well. Most Europeans who try to imitate an American accent usually sound like Bugs Bunny or John Wayne to our ears.
Don't fret about it - concentrate on what you are saying not how your accent may sound. Yours is probably very slight being as you are from Ohio anyway :)

The way we hear foreign accents is the way that foreigners hear ours. If I hear an English accent, I think it's interesting. If I hear a French accent, I think it's annoying.
Your perception defines your reality. That's true here as well as abroad.

well, how shall i put it? let's take for example the likes of Britney Spears: when they open their mouths, it kills the myth....had she talked with an English/ more subtle accent, i'd have forgiven her ...But,the accent is only the tip of the american iceberg ....:)
PS: i wondered,do american babies learn to speak with a chewing gum in the mouth?

Well, I am from central massachusetts and claim to have no accent; but southerners claim i do. i believe a new york accent makes you sound like an asshole. a southern drawl just makes you sound like a dumb redneck. the pompous west coast accent makes you sound fake. and the boston accent makes me want to jump out a ******* window. i don't know thats just me.
