Be sweet and mysterious. If your desperate it will show, and women don't like that. Don't use pick up lines unless you want to be made fun of, and don't crowd their space. If you ask a lady to dance and she says "no" just walk away.
This works for a guy friend of mine: Sit at a table in a club or bar and pick out which girl you would like to talk to. Once she walks by you with a drink "accidentally" bump into her and make her spill. Apologize and buy her another drink and drinks for her friends. She'll thank you, you'll get to talking and maybe even dancing. Hey it's a step...

Dude, don't use a book. Traditional pick up lines, even the non-cheesy ones, end up sounding kinda creepy, and adding a stilted, "I read this in a book" feel pretty much guarantees a disgusted stare and a turning away.
Just go up to her and talk to her. I know this is hard, and I happily leave it up to the guys most of the time because I am shy, but really, this is the best way to do it. Compliment her, ask about the book she's reading, whatever. A bit of a conversation will make her more comfortable, so you're more likely to get a yes when you ask for her number or if she'd like to get coffee or whatever.

Why does it matter what women think of these books? Do they work? Yes, if you take the time to learn from them. They are just like any other self help. Women are going to think these things are "funny" or "stupid" because they don't want to know or believe that women are actually very predictable. Once you learn what triggers interest in women, getting dates is pretty easy.

The taxi guy made me laugh.
No book can teach you what to do.
Be confident in yourself, and it'll show. Women will start to like you more. I pinky promise =)

You don't need a book. Just have a few $100 bills hanging out of your pockets.

Of course there are, but they're not social science.
You know what? You should watch *The Tao of Steve*. That movie will teach you all you need to know.

Woman can't be "picked up" unless they choose to be "picked up".
It normally works the other way around with woman “picking up” men; which may I add; is not very complicated.
On the contrary, men are just so “available”
