Their should be timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and a tab mounted to the engine block with numbers on it. The number 0 is what you need to line the pulleys mark with. Now you have to be careful, you could be 180 deg. off on your cam shaft alignment, check your distributor make sure the rotor is pointing to the number one cylinder spark plug wire on the distributor cap. The number one cylinder is the one closest to the front of the motor where the pulleys are.

changing the timing belt? There are timing marks on the case, crank, and camshaft(s). otherwise, pull the plug out of #1 cylinder(first one in the front of the car) put a long screwdriver in the hole and turn the engine over manually till the screwdriver sticks out the most

top dead center (TDC) on any engine is where cylinder no. 1 is at the highest point of rotation and just starting to DRAW in fresh fuel/air mix. the more appropriate question for you would be which cylinder in the no. 1 cylinder on your civic.

theres a scale by the harmonic balancer.there is numbers on it.there is a 0,its in the middle.

The timing marks should line up @ tdc....if not call a Honda dealer...
