You want at least 1 gig of ram, but if you go 2 gigs of ram you could get your memory put in so that it would enable dual channel. Dual channel gives you a minor speed boost. You also want to consider that the minumum for windows vista when it comes out next year is 1 gig. An intel pentium 4 processor works just fine and is cheap but I would suggest the intel pentium D. If you want to get a really good processor go with the intel core 2 duo. The intel core 2 duo is a great processor but be prepared to pay $$$ for it. You also want to consider the speed of the processor. An intel pentium 4 processer that is 3.2 ghz will cost more than an intel pentium 4 processer that is 3.0 ghz but the 3.2 ghz is faster. Another thing to consider is how much cache a computer has before buying it. the more cache, the better.

amdahl's new amd 64 bit quad-core chip. it may be pricey i think i read that they're 5-700 $s so far nothing i know of is faster for the price, except an eprom axperimental processor built by a professor at the univ. of houston that approached near super computer speeds and to top it off the array was auto configurable,on the fly. check out amdahl's new quad core chip first. good luck and happy computing
