Why does Christmas need to be about buying your kids stuff they'll forget about in a few days? What about recognizing what Christ did for us? Find a better way to spend not only this Christmas but every year, even when you are better off financially. This could be a blessing in disguise for you. Why not volunteer somewhere with them and make someone else's Christmas a little better?

Everyone has great ideas and the organizations listed are a great help. In the past when I haven't had any money (which is most of the time now that I think of it) anyway, I have asked my kids if you could have just one thing for Christmas what would it be? It also depends on their age but any way then I enlisted the help of every family member I could and pooled our resources and managed to get the item in question. Children love to spend quality time with their parents so I also planned a fun thing to do that day like sliding and hot chocolate and a movie and spent the rest of the day doing kid related activities. My children tell me know that it was their best christmas ever and I have to say it was the most memorable for me too. Other people in their lives give them gifts but only you can give them your love and time! Have a great Christmas.

First I would stress that christmas is not all about the toys. There are many things that can make a Christmas memorable beside giving the perect toy. The toys they will forget, the time spent with you they won't.
Free stuf: Go to the mall and see Santa. See store windows decorated for christmas. Go see all the houses decked out in christmas lights. See what church have christmas pagents, concert or live nativities. (These are frequently free or have a good will offering.) Go Christmas caroling. Go to a christmass eve service. Volunteer to pass out food at a shelter. (The advantage of this is, if you don't have enough money for a christmas feast, you can eat there and your children will never know it was because of lack of money.)
For a little money you can make Christmas cookies, go to a local zoo or meuseum see their christmas disply. (Our local zoo is free. Many places have free day or free passes you can get from the local library).
Teach your children that Christmas is not about what toys they get, but about Jesus, Family, Friends, and helping others.
If you feel you need to give a toy- Toys for Tots can help. there website is toysfortots.org. Many churchs have a local "Angel Tree" where they buy gifts for people in need. Salvation Army might also have resources. You can also wrap "practical items" like socks and clothes and put them under the tree to make it look more full. When we were poor, my mom would put orages and apples in our stocking to fill them more. Just don't do like my mother did one year and wrap toiletries. (She meant well, but now that we are older we joke about the deorderant and other tolietries we got that year.)
Hope that helps. Merry Christmas!

Some great family things you can do are do christmas puzzles, watch holiday movies, make cookies, and some crafts. It's a great way to occupy the timeu usually put to opening gifts for more memorable things.

Agencies like the Salvation Army, Good Neighbors and other local agencies gather names of families in need.
If you haven't done so already, you may want to consider doing this. There may be deadlines, so the sooner you get in for help, the better.
There may also be other "qualifications" like income, etc. So, be ready.
If you are a church goer, you may want to talk with the pastor or minister about seeking help as well.

Contact your local social service agency or church group.
They'll be able to get you on an adopt a family list, or direct you to where you can get help.
Good luck.
