You aren't doing it for long enough. Keep trying and eventually the pain will subside.

For one, you are never supposed to look directly into the sun. For two, its probably burning your eye. I'm not sure what the medical recourses are for staring into the sun, but if you think about it, your skin gets sunburned in a matter of minutes, so think about this the next time you try and stare at the sun, it can't be a good thing.

Because it is so bright. You really don't stare at the sun though, do you. If you did, you would be blind now, since the sun is bright enough to blind you if you ignore the pain and force yourself to stare at it.

The lenses in your eyes focus all the energy on a small portion of your retina. The power received at that point can severely damage your eye.

The pain should be a warning to you not to do it. You can easily destroy your vision.
