Yours is an excellent question. It seems that students of today take their education for granted and therefore, do not value it. Students appear to view education as a burden that one must endure, instead of appreciate the phenomenal opportunity that it actually is to advance one's place in the world. But, being inundated with a plethora of media, it cannot be blamed entirely upon the children. As human beings, we need to choose what to spend our time and attention on and with so many choices, it can be a confusing process, particularly for a child or young adult. We often choose the easy path, so to play a video game appeals much more than reading a book.
The true burden, I submit falls upon the shoulders of parents and teachers. Both, similarly inundated with media as well as a confusing range of choices and limited time. However, the solution must begin and continue through the teaching of the value of an education, but that is much easier said than done. It is a vexing and pernicious problem for which their are no easy solutions.

Have you even seen the English books (or any other textbook) that the children are using in schools today? EVERYTHING is being Re-Written by those who do NOT know anything about the subject they are writing on (and so many mistakes) -- and as far as history goes -- soon, WWII will be written OUT of our History Textbooks (shocking how this pivotal event has already been re-written, by History "scholars" that NEVER interviewed the SURVIVORS of this war -- and they are passing away at an extremely high rate now ... so sad really.)

I don't think it is illiteracy but technology. Most people have become accustomed to texting which requires abbreviation and blogging which encourages stream of consciousness and the feeling is the Internet is not a forum for perfection. It is a laid back environment of "pals" so no need to be overly formal. Many of the questions I see here are thoughtful and provocative although mi-spelled. It is more a function of comfort than lack of intelligence. Just my opinion.

I think myself that this is how the English language will end up, with so called education system in this country.
So what happened to your Punctuation, the word 'the' and the suffix 'ional'? I also note that you forgot to mention which country you are refering to, this is, the World Wide Web you know!

School system is to blame.
My sister brought an English book home once, it had spelling mistakes on every page.
Most were not corrected, plus a lot of the essays were marked A+.

I use spell checker. Even so, on this forum, they're using the English spellings. Neighbor comes out needing to be changed to neighbour. License needs to be changed to licence. Color must be changed to colour.
My teacher would have been sooo ticked off!

I think it's a generational thing. Young adults are used to the text message fad. They shorten the spelling of words to keep cost down. Sadly they carry this over to other communication medium, like emails, and Yahoo Answers.
Just a sign of the times I suppose.

Maybe if they went to school more and spent less time answering questions on Yahoo they might learn something. It's not just the questions that are illiterate it's the answers too.

They have been dumbing down kids in the public school system for over 50 years. It was premeditated. It's finally paying off for them. I think the plan for America is, a Banana Republic.

You missed "to" between think and myself.
The second paragraph did not make sense.
Do not criticise others as you are not perfect.
