my sony MDR-V250 headphones were about 3 weeks old when they suddenly stopped working. One day i went to a party and handed them to a friend to put in her bag. When I got them a little later, I plugged them in and heard nothing. Nothing seems to be torn or anything...no wetness or anything...

What caused it, and is it fixable? Did I seriously spend 30 bucks for nothing? :[

Are you sure it's the headphones? Did you try plugging them into anything else? Usually when headphones go bad, only one speaker goes out. Usually this is due to stress put on the cord near the connector causing a wire to go loose or sometimes the magnet that the voice coil is suspended around comes loose if they've been handled rough. For both to go out at the same time is very unusual and makes me suspect the audio source rather than the headphones themselves, particularly since they are so new. If you do determine it is the headphones that are at fault, you should take them back to the store you got them from and exchange them for another pair. Most places honour a 30 day warranty in store. Make sure you have the box and all original packaging or at the very least a receipt (since they can exchange yours for another of the exact same pair and steal the packaging from the new pair).
