If you have a mildly broken middle-toe on your foot, is it ok to just put a splint on it and let it heal? I stubbed my toe on a door and its very bruised and feels slightly broken. I am just curious if its ok to just splint it and forget it...lol, write back!!

It had to be a guy asking this! OK - yeah it sounds like you may have cracked something. NO its unlikely they would do more than strap it. A cast is usually used where there are muscles which will pull bones out of alignment. From personal experience - strapping hurts more than the original pain. If its black and blue it is obviously bruised and that will hurt just on its own. Elevate the foot, take it easy and take something for the pain rather than just complaining about it. You could try an ice pack but usually that's used in the first 24hrs to reduce the bruising. You can check to see if there are any areas of local heat - a fairly good indicator of a break. If you are still worried - for goodness sake - just go and see a Dr..

See if you can get your hands on some comfrey root. Comfrey is very good for bruises & small breaks. Way back when they used to use it on all broken bones but I wouldn't mess with broken legs or arms myself, LOL! I've used it on toes and fingers though, with good results.
Shred a little of the root, put some cold water on it and let it sit for a few hours, then when it gets slimy take some small pieces of tissue paper or gauze, drench them and put them on the bruised or broken toe. It'll stick and stiffen when it dries, so it will give a little support although it isn't as strong as a modern plaster cast. As always when bandaging something, don't wrap too tightly!

As long as it is only your toe and not into your foot, that is all that a MD could do for your toe. Splint it, treat it with ice to reduce swelling, and make sure it heals straight.
Sorry that this happened.

You need to have an X-ray to determine if it is, in fact, broken or just sprained. How to treat it not only depends on whether or not it is broken, but on how it is broken.

For example if it has a crack at an oblique angle and is not immobilized, as you walk it will cause the break to "wiggle" a bit and prevent it from ever knitting back together properly, eventually causing permanent damage.

There's nothing anyone can do for a broken toe except to tape it to the closest healthy toe and let it heal.

Yep, broken toes are things you fix yourself.

wish I had a dollar for every time I've done that. I simply use medical tape and tape the toe to the one next to it. Apply ice for twenty minutes every couple of hours, take Ibuprofen for discomfort and ease of swelling.
