Take a jeep tour. This is the best way to see Monument Valley. The jeeps take you off the main road with several photo stops, you get to visit a navajo woman in her home and an opportunity to buy authentic jewellery. The tour guide is a native and knows his stuff - but be warned it is very dusty and bumpy. I took the tour earlier this year and had a brilliant time!
You can also take a tour by horse back. Didn't take that one myself but it looked good.
