It has something to do with the Shah of Iran who had been ruling that country. The Shah of Iran (Mohammed Reza Pahlavi) was pro-American. So, Iran was actually a staunch U.S. ally at that time. That's why Iran remained neutral during the Arab-Israeli conflict at that period. However, the Shah was a despotic ruler who gripped his country with a iron hand, eliminating most of his political opponents and those who dared to criticize his government through political intimidation, assasination and torture. His dictatorial grip on power was all the while with the blessing of the U.S. (in the same way as the U.S. was supporting Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile). And anti-American sentiment grew in Iran because of this attitude and U.S. Foreign Policy in Iran. The feeling of anger and resentment steadily grew among Iranians who view their government and the U.S. equally responsible for this repression. This resulted in violent protests and demonstrations in the streets, especially among the students and young people, who are becoming more radical and more militant. Ayatollah Khomeini, a fundamentalist cleric living in exile in France became the rallying symbol in uniting these militant students and those opposing the Shah's rule. Eventually, the Shah was overthrown. One event that took place just as the Shah was deposed, was the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran by a group of militant students and taking Americans in the compound (mostly embassy staff) as captives. Thus started what became known as the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran.

The Shah of Iran was a benevolent dictator. Muslims were trying hard to stir up a revolution against him. The Ayatollah was regarded as the religious leader of this would be revolution.
The Shah was ill with cancer and I suspect tired of fighting them. He went to the US for cancer treatment and while he was gone they had their revolution.
The Muslim students attacked the US Embassy since the US was blamed for the Shah being the dictator.
Jimmy Carter was gutless and his only attempt to do anything about the kidnapping was to send a hand full of men in some helicopters to try to rescue the diplomats. There was a mid-air collision between a couple helicopters and the mission ended in failure and embarrassment. When Ronald Reagan was elected President, they almost immediately released the prisoners. They knew that Reagan would be sending the military to solve that problem. Now, one of the students who got away with violating international law and the agreement between the US and Iran is the President of Iran. And, some people are stupid enough to think that you can negotiate with him. LOL!

Initially it was not Iran per SE that took the hostages, but a group of radical students and non students that took over the embassy. Khomeini the Ayatollah of Rock n Rolla later endorsed and supported the nitwits. This was the beginning of the slide back to caveman status for the average Iranian.
