*LOL* That's a funny thing, my boyfriend and I have had several discussions about your question! Well for one they are cartoon characters! There was an article in TV Guide about The Simpson and that they were going to get a fifth finger! Well that was a few years ago but they still have four fingers! I'm really not srue why! I tried doing some research on your question on the interner net but I couldn't seem to find anything that really explained why. Mabe you have a little more time and you can go and do a little more research yourself. I hope you find your answer!!!

I apologise in advance for stating the apparently obviously unobvious obvious but....
Don't people (generally) have four fingers? plus a thumb (On each hand (They come in pairs as a rule))
Isn't it the case that cartoon characters generally have 3 fingers and a thumb (per hand (Numbers may vary))
But that aside, I did see once on some programme (about the Simpsons I think) that it is generally done this way because it is easier and quicker to draw 4 digits rather than 5.

Cartoons are exaggerations of actual life, and caricatures of both animals and humans. This being the case, certain aspects are skewed, such as the four fingers on each hand (or three fingers and a thumb for those who are apparently anal retentive).
This is done because drawing the correct number makes the hand look bigger than desired (most of the time). Somebody else mentioned the hand looking like a bunch of bananas, which is actually pretty close to the truth!
If a cartoonist has time to animate three fingers, a fourth wouldn't make or break him/her!

Cartoons are an abstract reflection of reality. If they had five fingers, thier follies and triuphms would be less entertaining. Depicting and making fun of real life is waht cartoons are about. doing and seeing the unbelieveable. Plain and simple an escape from the day to day.... why must everything be so closely bound to reality to make sense to some people?

A talking animal in a 3-piece suit driving to a 9-5 doesn't bother you, but the four-fingered gloved hand does?
1 thumb and 3 fingers "looks better," for some reason.
There's a scene on a Simpson's episode where one of the characters refers to the number "five," and needs two-hands to do it. Classic. Whenever G*d is shown on the Simpsons, he has 5 fingers. ONLY G*d has five.

It is a whole lot easier to draw a character with 4 fingers than with 5 fingers.

Because hands are notoriously difficult to draw accurately, four is a better way of doing it to make it simpler and more cartoon like.
Great artists have struggled to create realistic looking hands. Cartoonists have the advantage of creating fantasy figures rather than aiming to be accurate.

Easier to draw, so that the fingers wouldn't look a mess. By cutting down to four, there is one less finger to focused on.
