Yes. From the start of the war France, Spain and the Netherlands all gave financial support to the colonies. After the American victory at Saragossa, France entered an alliance with the colonies in 1778. Spain became a combatant in 1779 and the Netherlands joined in 1780. Ironically, as a consequence, The French Revolution was partly inspired by the revolutionary ideas brought back by French soldiers and from visits by Americans such as Benjamin Franklin.

Yes, here are just a few examples:
February 6, 1778 - American and French representatives sign two treaties in Paris: a Treaty of Amity and Commerce and a Treaty of Alliance. France now officially recognizes the United States and will soon become the major supplier of military supplies to Washington's army. Both countries pledge to fight until American independence is won, with neither country concluding any truce with Britain without the other's consent, and guarantee each other's possessions in America against all other powers.
The American struggle for independence is thus enlarged and will soon become a world war. After British vessels fire on French ships, the two nations declare war. Spain will enter in 1779 as an ally of France. The following year, Britain will declare war on the Dutch who have been engaging in profitable trade with the French and Americans. In addition to the war in America, the British will have to fight in the Mediterranean, Africa, India, the West Indies, and on the high seas. All the while facing possible invasion of England itself by the French.
February 23, 1778 - Baron von Steuben of Prussia arrives at Valley Forge to join the Continental Army. He then begins much needed training and drilling of Washington's troops, now suffering from poor morale resulting from cold, hunger, disease, low supplies and desertions over the long, harsh winter.
June 18, 1778 - Fearing a blockade by French ships, British Gen. Clinton withdraws his troops from Philadelphia and marches across New Jersey toward New York City. Americans then re-occupy Philadelphia.
July 10, 1778 - France declares war against Britain.
August 8, 1778 - American land forces and French ships attempt to conduct a combined siege against Newport, Rhode Island. But bad weather and delays of the land troops result in failure. The weather-damaged French fleet then sails to Boston for repairs.
June 16, 1779 - Spain declares war on England, but does not make an alliance with the American revolutionary forces.
January 20, 1783 - England signs a preliminary peace treaty with France and Spain.
February 3, 1783 - Spain recognizes the United States of America, followed later by Sweden, Denmark and Russia.
February 4, 1783 - England officially declares an end to hostilities in America.

Yes. In 1781 the French fleet arrived off the coast of Yorktown Va. This kept the English fleet from supplying and supporting the English army on shore at Yorktown. At the same time George Washington marched down from New York with his army (and the French) to keep General Cornwallis from leaving Yorktown by land. The English were trapped, they had to surrender or die. They surrendered. This surrender could not have happened without the French army and navy. All through the revolutionary war, the Americans were never strong enough (by themselves) to defeat the British.

Yes, mostly from France. We fought a naval war with France about 20 years later, France won World War One with our help, and though the allies might have won the second world war without us, France then would have been a Soviet Puppet. Spain and the Netherlands also helped us gain our independence, they fought Britiain on the global stage.

The British lost the American war of Independence at SARATOGA (New York State) in 1778.
IF the British had won that battle, the French would have joined Britain, because the British lost, the French went over to the American side...(as they do )
The British lost the war at Saratoga but it was not until Yorktown 3 years later that it finally sunk in and they signed for surrender.

Yes it did, although i dont think that the european countries (France in particular) were helping to expand the freedom and democracy that they were proud to have developed. They were simply trying to disrupt the British trade and keep the British millitary busy whilst they attempted to carve a large chunk of the continent for themselves. What is the most interesting is the high level of support the British People gave to the desire for American independance, they saw the Americans as cousins that were being opressed as much as they were by an aristocracy just interested in money at the workers expense.
I notice that the debt America ows to France was soon forgotten when the US govenment demanded help for thier illegal Iraq war and the French refused. Ironic that it was the British who joined in the frey isnt it?
Thanks for the chance to rant, ive had a long day.

The American war of independence, was a war fought between the British, Germans, Americans and Aboriginal Americans, against Americans, Irish, French and Aboriginal Americans from different tribes.
The British used German mercenaries, loyal tribes, Americans loyal to Britain and a few of their own men. The loyal Americans, in the main fled to Canada and other parts of the Empire after defeat.

There were no other European countries, but France, who helped America gain independence from Great Britain. The US repaid the debt in full, by helping France in two World Wars.
