Connect two xp machines for file sharing?

If you have a crossover cable you will run at the speed of the slowest network card - whereas with a switch or hub you will run at the speed of your network or network card depending on which is slowest.

To make a crossover cable you just need to swap pairs 1 and 2 for 3 and 6 (ie oranges for greens)

fastest and easiest.

mostly likely you will not be transferring large files from PC 1 to PC 2 and from PC 2 to PC 1 at the same time. that might cause some slower file transfer once the buffers overrn on the NICs.

you can use a cross-over for now and upgrade to a broadband router/hub or router/switch down the road.

Well sort of...

A crossover cable will allow direct connection between the two computers without a hub or data switch, however, Windows XP is not the ideal platform to handle network traffic.

In my experience, you would be better off buying two standard ethernet cables and an ethernet hub (or switch) to connect the two machines...the hub/switch is specifically designed to handle the data traffic properly and eliminate both network bottlenecks and data collisions...especially for fire sharing and/or gaming.

Best wishes...

The speed is the same on cross over and straight through. Cross overs are specifically used to connect two TCP/IP enabled ports together, such as "Two Talking ports".

A PC to a PC required cross-over so they dont talk and listen on the same wires in the bundle. A straight through is for a PC to a HUB/SWITCH since it just re-broadcasts the data to another port, or all ports.

I guess so, Especially if they both have a giga bit ethernet interface and connected with a cat 6 UTP cable.
