Even though the other answers are good and true, YOU will ultimately make a decision to either stay in school or take the GED. I also would suggest that you stay in school. They can be great years, but, should you decide to split and take the GED here's what you need to do. Make sure that your READING COMPREHENSION and your MATH SKILLS are up to par. I used to tutor and teach GED classes in a prison system. They take the same tests as what you would take. What gets people every time is READING COMPREHENSION and BASIC MATH SKILLS (Decimals, Fractions, Percentages and so on). It's not hard to get the GED, you just have to study and prepare for it. You can go to a local library or maybe the school where they give the test and get study books for the GED that have practice tests in the back, so that you can have a good idea about what the test looks like and what's in store if you take it. Again, I would suggest staying in school and enjoying the time you have left to go. But, if you decide otherwise, get those study books with the practice tests and prepare yourself. Does'nt hurt to have somebody drill you on questions too or have you explain your answers so that there's no doubt that you understand what you're doing and how you came to the answer you did. Trust me it works. I never had a guy fail if he applied himself and focused on the task at hand. Whatever you decide to do, Good Luck.

Staying in school is definitely preferable. However, you didn't elaborate on your reasons for trying to make this decision. Contrary to a lot of opinion a GED is not not worth anything. A GED will get you into college - I have 2 degrees. You need to weigh your decision very carefully. If you decide to go for the GED you will not be able to go back to high school and you will not be able to do the graduation walk. There are very valid reasons why some people have made the choice to get their GED rather than stay in school. You need to look at how you would benefit staying in school vs. getting the GED along with what is going on in your life at this time.

Getting a GED is as easy and going in and taking one test. If you pass you get your GED if you don't pass you pay to take it again. You can also sign up for the class they offer to help you pass the test. You should not drop out of school at all though. If you quit something like school you'll be prone to quit other things in your life and while you don't see it now, you will wish you had finished later in life. I dropped out at 16 and got my GED at 19 and am now 30 wishing I could have stayed in school and finished because how can I tell me kids they will stay in school when I didn't?

You have only to pass a test. Your local library may have videos or written publications about what you can expect on the GED test. Sometimes local junior colleges even have a preparatory class. Do you have a counseling center or career center at your school? They can help a lot.
As for dropping out, please consider that the worst choice possible. You need many skills, not only to survive for yourself and loved ones, but for the pure pleasure of doing something well. Stay connected and do what you can right now.
What do you like to do? Your counseling center at school should be able to help you find your strengths and set goals to develop them.
