The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster was the destruction of the Space Shuttle Columbia over Texas on February 1, 2003 during reentry into the Earth's atmosphere on its 28th mission, STS-107. All seven members of the crew were killed.

On return from a 16 day SpaceHab Mission the shuttle's unknown damage caused the accident.Grounding the remaining shuttle orbiters for ET and Safety improvements.Also the developement of HeatShield Repair methods that were tested out on STS-116 and 117.
