Get him an iTunes gift card and if he doesn't have an iPod get him a gift certificate to an electronic/music store so he can buy the CD himself. The last thing you'll want him to do is return your gift and since its not a close friend, just a Kris Kringle exchange, a gift certificate should be fine.

A gift certificate for something like musical.... radio shack, best buy and stuff!!
