Normally, they're called the 'Red Tops' in the trade, or tabloids generically - despite the Times & Indy going to tabloid format, they're still 'broadsheets' in terms of content.

Officially, Tabloids or Red Tops. I consider them to be the lowest form of gutter press - scurrilous rubbish - I can never understand why they are so popular.

the sun, the mirror, daily star, news of the world, daily express, daily mail are all referred to as tabloids or red tops. and i for one cannot stand reading any of them
