What do you mean? "How long after you are arrested before one is assigned to you?" or Are you asking "For what length of time is a public defender assigned to your case?"

At your arraignment, the judge will ask you if you have counsel. If you say no, he/she will ask you if you can afford counsel. If you say no again, the judge will turn you over to the public defender and an attorney will be appointed. This only applies to criminal cases.

well if your miranda rights were read to you they told you that you would have one appointed....doesnt the sixth amendment state that we have the right to a speedy trial? the right to a speedy trial is intended to ensure that defendants are not subjected to unreasonably lengthy incarceration prior to a fair trial...violations of the principle such as where the State has failed to bring the case to trial for an "unreasonable" length of time may be a cause for dismissal of a criminal case....this may vary state to state on length of time..i think new york is 6 months
