I am 14 years old and have had my period. My mom says that I am now a woman so I can take One A Day Women's. What are your thoughts on this? Do I have to wait until I am a certain age or is it once you start mensturating?

I switched my daughter also when she started her period - it just made sense because she could use the extra vitamins. In addition I have her taking Calcium with Vitamin D (because it helps your body absorb the calcium better.

You don't have to wait until a certain age; the only thing that's different between a Women's vitamin and say a flinstone's vitamin is the formulation and the amount of iron in the vitamin.

Women's vitamins contain more iron than most others because women lose a lot of iron during menstruation.

If you decide to start taking the vitamin, be sure to drink a lot of water. you might also take it every other day rather than every day because iron can have a constipating effect on the body.

Hi there maybe you didn't quite understand what your Mom was saying to you. What she meant by you are a woman now is you are going into woman hood and you will begin to see changes in your body as you mature into a young woman..You will not stop growing until you reach the age of 18 but each family's history is different..Also there is a lot of misunderstood information on vitamins and you really need to do some research on them..Please be patient with your body you will be fine..Also if you really want to take a vitamin supplement have your Mom ask your pediatrician what would be best for you to take for you age...I hope that I helped you...

The directions say 12 years or older on my Centrum. Why, doeyou want to take childrens' vitamins still? If you like the taste of Finstones, Centrum chewables tast the same.

I don't know about taking extra vitamins though. On multi should be fine, but yes your doctor should know about it. Adding things like calcium without being under the care of a doctor can cause things like kidney stones. And some viatims have extra herbs, stay away because they can cause side effects.

Good question... here's what I got straight from the One-A-Day website:

http://www.oneaday.com/products/womens.shtml

It says *adults*. Drug companies are so careful about providing specific requirements about their supplement concerning adolecent and teens.

My guess would be for you to ask your doctor about what best meets your RDA of vitamins and minerals, and see if the doctor recomends a vitamin supplement. Also, if your diet includes a good amount of vegetables, meats (red meat maybe once a week, for iron) and good complex carbs, you're getting all you need.

Just read the label and see what is says. If it says that you're not old enough to take it, then don't. I would suggest that you try and convince your mom to buy another vitamin recommended for someone your age.

When in doubt about such things seek a Drs. or druggest advice especially at your age. If you are eating a well balanced diet that includes veg. fruit, meat & dairy products. The chances are good that you have the vitimin thing covered & don't need supplements. One thing to keep in mind, don't ever thing that a supplement can replace the food. At you age that would not be good.

The age is probably posted on the label on the container.
