Created opals can be made from something entirely different. Some are just paint on plastic.

There are cheap opals used in jewelry though which are doublets. They are a layer of opal (like a thin slice) molded over a cheap piece of plastic. They are basically fake but sell as real opals.

they are real opals but created by some other process other than by the earth... for example..graphite is put into a chamber and great pressure is applied..when the box is open, you have created diamonds... They are real diamonds but the process doesn't take as long as it does if they come from a mine.
