try to run an anti-virus software if you can. it sounds like there is a virus that is taking a lot of your memory usage. if you can't even get a virus scanner to run you might want to try to start up in safe mode. if you can't get rid of the virus, you will have to reformat your pc. i would take it to a store like the geek squad though before you do that. they usually have tools where they can salvage as much as they can before they would have to reformat. good luck!

Hi,
Well there are many things that can slow down your pc drastically or even freeze it.
Here are some examples:
1.Spyware,adware
2.Viruses
3. Ram might need to be replaced.
Here are the solutions to these problems.
1. Download an antispyware program here a few that I like:
- AVG AntiSpyware
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Spyware/3000-8022_4-10610898.html?tag=lst-0-3
-Spybot
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=spybot&tag=srch
2. For Viruses we'll need an antivirus of course. If you already have one installed and it is updated dont worry about downloading this. If you do have one but it is old uninstall and install this antivirus that i am recommending you.
-AVG Antivirus Free Edition (This is free but it really gives you the same quality as if you bought one)
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1
3. Sometimes Ram can just stop working wel after a while.
To test and see if the ram is still in good working condition. Use this small program.

Try visiting www.trendmicro.com and follow their steps to run a free online spyware / virus scan.
If your computer isn't able to stay up long enough for the scan to complete, then you might explore the option of trying a reinstall. If you use Windows XP, you can attempt a "repair install" as described here:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
Back up your data before you reformat or reinstall, of course. If you try the repair install keep in mind that after it's finished, you should scan your system for traces of virus / spyware to prevent reinfection, if that is indeed the cause.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.
Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php
Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/
Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!
Enjoy your cleaner and faster computer!
