Some do, some don't.. Depends on the manager and how busy they are, or if they care. Some will ask about your personality and some will just check to see if your references are real and what they say.

depends on the company where you have applied
some have it as a sheet of paper
others call everything
the company I now work for only employs 10% of applicants
they are very throrough
oh - and the big killer -* * * * * * * * *- you lie - you are OUT!
