To have someone validate our feelings without judging us.

You did not specify which type of therapist you were referring to. Physio-therapists, Massage-therapist, Chiropractors, Psychiatrists?

Therapists are more knowledgeable than us and can also be more objective which is very helpful. Some things we are not able to do for ourselves and this is where a therapist comes to our aid.

Also, in some areas of our lives we may or may not know what to do about a particular situation and that is where a therapist can be helpful. Sometimes we even know what should be done and by talking to a therapist, who has lots more experience than we do, we are able to see things more clearly. Therapists tell it like it is since they are speaking to you from a profession stand-point unlike a friend who may not say things that you should hear just because they do not want to hurt your feelings.

Do we need them? At some point in time everyone needs a therapist so the answer is yes.

Should we feel ashamed about going to a therapist? The answer is no but it is our right to keep that confidential.

Hope I shed some light on your question even though I was not sure which type of therapist you were referring to. ;)

Because we're not crazy, we're just feeling a little sad sometimes. Therapists can do what friends can't do: they can listen objectively, from an emotional distance. You're asking this question in the psychology section, but this can apply to ANY therapist. A person who isn't a personal friend can give a more objective, effective kind of help because of not being personally involved with the client. Good therapists- of all kinds- keep that professional separation from their clients and that keep the therapy effective.
And any person who is considering becomng a therapist- of any kind- needs to be a client of that kind of therapy to get an understanding of how it works, and more importantly, what can go wrong and cause the therapy NOT to work. It is a profession. Every case is an individual case. It requires a live person with a present mind. It takes a lot of training and continual practice. That is why this kind of profession is called a "practice". Because each case and each client is a new experience and a new application of the tools of the trade.
There. Are we convinced yet?

Why not? Someone who is educated in ways to solve problems and methods for overcoming things, getting rid of fears and anxieties, starting something new, ect.- what is wrong with seeking help? It isn't defeat to admit that hey, someone else may have some answers for my life that I don't have...great! It is nice to know that there are therapists out there who can help if I am really in a rut and have no one else to talk to or can't talk to anyone else in my own personal life. Therapists are responsible for helping many people move on in life, deal with problems that they may never have otherwise dealt with, and many other things. Religious leaders and teachers also serve a type of therapist role- where would we be without them? I feel that therapists, no matter what their title, are a necessity. They are the bandaids that help to hold the human psyche together. This is why we need therapists.

Hi,
We need therapists, because they have knowledge about many life issues and as a stranger to the client can be objective. Therapists unlike friends don't have a friendship to lose by asking the hard questions or getting information this potentially damaging in other ways. They can't gossip to others about your issues either.

A majority therapists shouldn't be in the practice. But as long as insurance and people to pay them exist there will be therapists to listen to people's problems. Some people truly need a good swift kick in the a&s (and this coming from someone that is in the business)

Because we need therapy, and therefore we need the help of a therapist (kind of like you can't give yourself a massage).

Two reasons: 1) Nobody wants to listen to your problems and 2) because the problems or issues you have, usually deal with the people closest to you that you'd normally confide in, so you can't.
